Ultrasound is a tool for learning critical information about your pregnancy. By staying informed, you’ll learn valuable details, identify issues requiring medical attention, and more.
One detail ultrasound detects is the pregnancy’s gestational age. We’ll explain this term below so you have the facts in hand.
The Pregnancy Help Center of West Houston also provides free ultrasounds to confirm your pregnancy and learn this vital information. We’re here for you.
What is the “Gestational Age”?
“Gestational age” refers to the age of the pregnancy. You may have heard it described as “how far along you are.” It is crucial to remember that this term isn’t the same as “embryologic age,” which refers to the actual age of the embryo or fetus.
Knowing how far along you are helps determine your due date. You may use this information to pinpoint when you might have conceived. However, keep in mind that your gestational age begins on the first day of your last normal menstrual period and includes some time before conception.
How Ultrasound Detects This Information
An ultrasound measures the embryo or fetus to determine gestational age. This is especially helpful if you have irregular menstrual cycles or other concerns—it’ll help provide accurate information.
The National Library of Medicine notes that the most accurate time to determine gestational age is between weeks 8 and 12. Growth rates are the fastest and most consistent then.
The ultrasound technician (also called “sonographer”) or registered nurse will measure the fetus’s crown-rump (head to buttocks) length and provide an estimation. They will also measure the gestational sac (the large fluid cavity surrounding the embryo or fetus).
Measuring the crown-rump length doesn’t happen right away. The fetal pole (a small, ring-like structure), also known as the embryo, is often present at about 5 ½ weeks gestation. As the limbs appear on the embryo, crown-rump measurements can be made. The size determines the gestational age.
Knowing your gestational age can help provide clarity about your pregnancy. We’ll help you gather the details needed to move forward.
